The zeitgeist of our times is indisputably one fuelled by instant gratification. As attention spans decrease the ability to hold one’s focus for a prolonged period of time has become an endeavour in itself.

As an almost unintentional antidote to the instant gratification of our age cinema has featured many 3 hour+ films over the past few years with films such as The Batman, Avatar 2, Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon.

One would argue that the need for an intermission is not borne from an inability to focus on a narrative beyond the length of a TikTok video but to prevent yourself from leaving more than popcorn kernels on the seat as a memory of your visit to the cinema.

Whereas historically intermissions were necessary to allow projectionists to change out film reels now the calls for their return are mostly spurred on by weak bladders. Maybe the problem isn’t the film but the large soft drink before it.

Our bladders have become such a talking point when visiting the cinema that the founders of the RunPee app have capitalised on it. The app pinpoints the perfect time to head to the toilet during a film.

In case you missed it — Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father.

Wider calls for cinema intermissions have been made by many including Clemence
